Wheel of Time is sold in small boxed sets, not one big one, so the decision is where to start and how many boxes you are willing to buy. For a new reader, the first box (books 1-3) is the only one to buy until they know they are hooked: the series is fourteen main novels plus a prequel.

This is desk research from Macmillan’s listings for Tor’s sets, checked on November 7, 2026. We have not handled any of these. We give no prices; the sets add up quickly across a full series, so check each listing.

The sets we could verify

Premium Boxed Set II also exists in Macmillan’s catalog, but we could not confirm its contents from the publisher’s page, so we do not cover it. Check its listing before relying on it to fill the gap between sets I and III.

Paperback Boxed Set I and Premium Boxed Set I

Both hold the first three novels: The Eye of the World, The Great Hunt and The Dragon Reborn. The Paperback Boxed Set is the Tor Books edition, and the Premium Boxed Set I is a Tor Fantasy mass market edition. The titles are the same, so the choice is format and look. If the recipient already has a standard mass market shelf, the premium set matches the later boxes; if they want a standard paperback, take the paperback set. Check the listing’s format line before ordering, since the two sets are easy to confuse.

Premium Boxed Sets III, IV and V

These are for readers already past book six. Set III covers books 7-9, set IV books 10-12, and set V holds the final two novels plus the prequel New Spring. Gifting any of these to someone who has not read the earlier books is a mistake; the series builds on itself.

How to choose

  • New reader, or watched the show first: the first box only. Pair it with the plan to buy the next one when book three is done.
  • Gift for a series fan who is partway through: ask which book they are on, and buy the box that begins after it.
  • A complete-set gift: you would need all five boxes and the unverified set II; weigh that against buying the books individually.
  • Reading order: New Spring is the series prequel and appears only in set V, so the first box does not include it.

Screen tie-in and order

The books were adapted as the Prime Video series The Wheel of Time. For what the show covers and how it compares, see our guide to whether The Wheel of Time is based on Robert Jordan’s novels . We do not have a stand-alone Wheel of Time reading-order page. For other gift sets, see our box set gift guide .
