The four first-volume editions of The Sandman do not collect the same issues, so a bigger or fancier book is not automatically more story. Book One and the Absolute Vol. 1 both end at issue #20; the Omnibus Vol. 1 runs to #37; and the Deluxe Edition Book One stops at #16. This page is about which volume to buy. For the order to read the stories in, see our Sandman reading order and special editions guide .

This is desk research from DC’s and Penguin Random House’s own listings, checked on November 7, 2026. We have not handled any of these books and say nothing about print quality or weight. We give no prices; the Absolute is a premium slipcased edition and the Omnibus is a very large hardcover, so check each listing.

The Sandman Book One (paperback)

DC’s page says Book One collects The Sandman #1-20. At 560 pages, Penguin Random House lists its arcs as Preludes and Nocturnes, The Doll’s House and Dream Country, including “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” It is the first of four volumes in this paperback set, which makes it the right entry point: you get the first twenty issues, enough to decide whether to continue, in the cheapest format.

The Deluxe Edition Book One (hardcover)

Penguin Random House lists this DC hardcover as collecting Sandman #1-16 and Sandman Midnight Theatre #1, which it says make up the first two paperback volumes, in an oversize format with bonus content. It is shorter than Book One, so it ends earlier in the story. Choose it when the hardcover format is the point and the recipient will not mind that it stops before issue #20.

The Sandman Omnibus Vol. 1 (hardcover)

DC describes it as a “massive hardcover” collecting The Sandman #1-37 and The Sandman Special #1, at 1,040 pages, with a cover by Dave McKean and a mature-readers rating. It goes far beyond the other first volumes, so it is the best value in story per book for someone sure they want to keep going. A heavy book is also harder to read in bed or on a commute, so match it to the reader.

The Absolute Sandman Vol. 1 (slipcased)

DC describes the first of four slipcased Absolute Edition volumes: The Sandman #1-20 with new coloring approved by Neil Gaiman for the first 18 issues, the original Sandman proposal, a gallery of character designs, the original script for #19 with reproductions of Charles Vess’s pencils, a new introduction by Paul Levitz and an afterword by Gaiman, at 612 pages. It collects the same issues as Book One but in a collector’s presentation with the extras. It is a gift for a committed fan, not a starting point.

Which to buy

  • New reader, or watched the show first: Book One.
  • A gift for a fan who has read the early issues: the Absolute, for the extras, or the Omnibus for the extra story.
  • Someone who wants to start with a hardcover: the Omnibus, or the Deluxe if the shorter run is acceptable.
  • Check overlap: Book One, the Deluxe and the Absolute each cover the same opening, so owning one makes the others a duplicate.

Screen tie-in

The comic was adapted as Netflix’s The Sandman. If the recipient is coming from the series, any of these is a valid starting point, with Book One the simplest. The series order and the companion books are in our Sandman reading order guide . For other gift sets, see our box set gift guide .
