Buy books 1-4 first. The second set only makes sense once the reader has finished Drums of Autumn. Penguin Random House lists Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels as two four-book mass market boxed sets, which together cover the first eight novels. For a single, nicer gift, there is a hardcover Collector’s Edition of the first book.

This is desk research from Penguin Random House’s listings, checked on November 7, 2026. We have not handled these sets. We give no prices; check the Amazon listing. The sets are mass market paperbacks, a smaller and lighter format than trade paperbacks.

Books 1-4

The first set holds Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager and Drums of Autumn. Penguin Random House lists the imprint as Bantam Dell and describes the story as that of Claire Randall, a former combat nurse who is transported from 1945 Scotland to 1743, where she becomes entangled with the young Highlander Jamie Fraser. Four novels make a large commitment, but they are the natural first purchase because the series is sequential.

Books 5-8

The publisher describes “a gorgeously packaged boxed set featuring mass market paperback editions” of books five through eight. It follows the first set directly, so it works as a follow-up gift, not a starting point. Skipping to it would leave a new reader without the first four novels.

The 20th Anniversary Collector’s Edition

This is not a box set. It is a 688-page hardcover of the first novel, which the publisher says features “an original essay, a new map, and more.” It suits a fan who already knows the story and wants a keepsake of book one, or a gift that does not require buying four books at once.

Which to buy

  • Starting from the Starz series: the books 1-4 set; or Outlander alone if four books feel like too much.
  • A fan partway through: ask which book they are on, then buy the box that starts after it.
  • Someone who loves the first book: the Collector’s Edition, as a keepsake rather than a reading copy.
  • Books beyond eight: neither set includes them, and we do not cover later volumes here.

Order and screen tie-in
